Who to ask

From the parish

The building

A parish church, at parish scale. Nothing here is a cathedral, because this is not one.

An open book resting on a wooden ledge in warm low light
The lectern Bible, open at whatever was read last.
Rows of votive candles burning in blue and red holders
The candle stand. People light these who never come to anything else.
Three leaded windows in a plain stone wall
The south aisle windows, 1878, and the reason the room is cold.
A weathered stone cross against the sky with graves behind
The churchyard is still open. Ask in the office.
The pipes of a church organ rising into the roof
The organ. Two ranks do not speak and we know which.
Flowers tied to the end of a dark wooden pew
Pew ends, done by whoever is on the rota.
A jar of gypsophila hung from a wooden pew end
Weddings. The jars come back the same afternoon.
A dim church interior in monochrome, light falling down the nave
Half past four in November, which is when this church is at its best.
